Forty Acres

I've seen trouble in the ghettos
Like there's trouble on T.V.
And there's trouble in the places
Where there's no equality
And there's trouble in the places
Where men are never free

You know that in America
Justice is not free
And in some States*
The right to vote
Is flushed for felony
Is flushed for felony

And de Tocqueville had it right you know
About Democracy
And if a man
Don't have the right to vote
You know he's never free
You know he's never free

Well you know we fought in every war
From Civil to Vietnam
They even sent us to the Gulf
To take the Man Saddam
(And take the Taliban)

We read and learned our History
Of rights and slavery
And we learned about the promises
of 1863
(When Abe he set them free)

And looking back over all those years
One thing's plain to see
If a man don't have a piece of land
You know he's never free

So give me forty acres
And give me some new rules
And let me grow and harvest
And I'll share it all with you
I'll share it all with you.
